After the release of her single “Water” in 2023, Tyla became an international pop sensation. She won a Grammy in February for Best African Music Performance, and on Monday (April 29), the song was certified two times Platinum by the RIAA.
Early comparisons to Rihanna surfaced due to the striking similarities in their career trajectories. While Rihanna ventured to the US at sixteen, Tyla’s roots remained in Johannesburg, South Africa, before her eventual migration to the UK.
Addressing the ongoing comparisons in a recent Cosmopolitan cover story, Tyla asserted her individuality, emphasizing that while she appreciates Rihanna’s influence, her artistic expression is distinct. “The reason Rihanna is Rihanna is what makes it flattering,” she explained. “That’s very kind of you. Meanwhile, I’m the one who creates the art. Because I’m Tyla.”
In a candid moment during an interview with Trevor Noah for Interview Magazine in 2023, Tyla shared her admiration for Rihanna’s journey to fаme. “I usually identify with music, not with certain performers,” she remarked. “Even though Rihanna was born outside of America, I still recall being enamoured with her tale.”
Tyla’s debut album, aptly titled “Tyla,” dropped earlier this year, featuring an array of fan-favorite tracks such as “ART,” “TrutҺ or Dare,” and “On and On.” Collaborations with renowned artists like Tems on “No.1” and Gunna and Skillibeng on “Jump” further solidified her place in the music industry. The album also boasts collaborations with Kelvin Momo, Becky G, and Travis Scott, showcasing Tyla’s versatility and unique musical vision.
