Flo Milli, Tems, and Tierra Whack perform on NPR’s “Tiny Desk” in honor of Black Music Month

Black Music Month is an annual occasion to pay tribute to pioneers in the music industry and the impact they had on the field. Tems, Tierra Whack, Brittney Spencer, SWV, Flo Mili, and more were among the great rappers and singers chosen by NPR for their “Tinky Desk” series, which was created to honor the event.

Bobby Carter, a producer and host, told ESSENCE that June’s bill was about “all me𝚗” when he and Charlie Wilson were leading the pack in the first week of last year. Last year at this time, I thought, “Wow, there are so many me𝚗.” This year, I intend to make a bigger splash and pay tribute to the wоmen who have influenced Black music—which, to me, is music in general. Last year, I had a feeling we would be doing this.

“So, what you see in this lineup is just the best attempt possible at really casting a wide net,” he continued, “so if you are into a country, if you are into Hip Hop, if you are into new R&B, if you are into old R&B, we’re trying to do as much as we can and represent as much within the month.”The year 2024 is almost halfway over, and viewers have already seen some spectacular “Tiny Desk” performances. During his 25-minute concert in March, Big Sean performed a medley of his older songs, including “Blessings,” “My Last,” and “Marvin & Chardonnay,” among others.

In February, Tinashe got her bouquet. The singer sang her hits “Unconditional,” “Touch & Go,” “2 On,” and “Treason” live for the audience. Her most recent studio album, BB/ANG3L, released in 2023, featured the track in question.

While we wait for new versions of “Tiny Desk,” Flo Milli fans may look forward to “Beef FloMix” and “Never Lose Me,” which are staples on her current tour with Gunna. Tems might surprise us with a BORN IN THE WILD-themed item, and Whack might play some old favorites from Whack World 2018.
