Several famous hip-hop artists, including Lil Wayne, Juvenile, and Mannie Fresh, converged on Los Angeles this week to honor Slim and Birdman, the founders of Cash Money Records.
Ronald and Brian Williams, who are brothers, were honored guests at Thursday’s (June 27) second annual YouTube Leaders & Legends Gala in Los Angeles.Speeches were delivered to the New Orleans moguls during the star-studded black tie event by YouTube’s head of music, Lyor Cohen; Catherine Brewton, BMI’s VP of creative; Polow Da Don, producer; and Avery and Monte Lipman, brothers and chief executives of Republic Records, who acknowledged the Williams brothers as mentors during their careers.
Yo Gotti, Saweetie, Queen Naija, LL Cool J, NLE Choppa, Kevin Liles, and Quality Control co-founder Pierre “P” Thomas were among the others that were present.
According to Billboard, Birdman, who took the stage with his brother Slim, reflected on their childhood and the influence of Cash Money’s storied reign on the game during his victory speech.
“Living in every project in New Orleans wasn’t easy for us,” he claimed. I hopped on the streets at 12 years old, had been in and out of homes and prisons, and was wearing two Rolexes at 14 years old; I was a real lost kid trying to find my path. I didn’t want these kids I met to end up like me, did you? I noticed that [Lil] Wayne appeared to be following in the footsteps of [Cash Money artist] B.G., who was also hitting that way.
“I wаnted to rescue their lives,” he continued. Attempting to save a life was my entire objective. Because I was careless, I also required assistance. Only my brother was worthy of my utmost regard, and I would have sacrificed my life for him. Putting B.G. and Lil Wayne in the studio was my method of rescuing them. Supposedly, the studio would replace the streets.
“With all due respect to Jay-Z, I recall when he announced his retirement and Wayne released a video proclaiming, ‘Since the best rapper retired, I’m the best rapper alive.'” From that point on, a lot of crаp changed for us. Simultaneously, as we stated, hip-hop is extinct. They start chatting, and we’re like, “What the f-k?” We are completely uninformed about such kind of stuff.
According to Birdman, they finally decided it was their moment to dominate the hip-hop industry. That’s when Nicki Minaj, Drake, and Young Money were born. We sort of stifled hip-hop. We made it through the New Orleans cоnflict unscathed. Today, we’re not only making it through life, we’re thriving. I just intended to save four lives when we began, but we ended up saving the lives of thousands of motherf-kers. My brother, who was like a father to me, deserves all the praise and appreciation in the world for rescuing me.
In contrast, Slim began his remarks to the audience by praising the three illustrious Cash Money alumni who had come to celebrate with them. His words were filled with pride as he spoke about Juvenile, Wayne, and [Mannie] Fresh, whom he had seen in the studio. Their rivalry was one of friendly rivalry. Every night, we would go from doing two songs to five. They were there giving it their all, just like a basketball player. What really fills me with pride, though, is that they are continuing their careers with family riches, juggling music with other pursuits, and so on.
To reach this position, my brother and I had to overcome several obstacles. When I was younger, someone told me that I would never amount to anything and that I wouldn’t be worth anything. If you want to break me, you’ll need to do more than that. I am not easily broken in that way. I am now in possession of a few extra quarters as a result of my motivation to work hard.
Before he ended, he gave the audience some words of wisdom: “Don’t let no one tell you what you cannot do!” Do what makes you happy. If you want to win, that’s your only option.
“I love y’all,” Slim chimed in after mentioning Polow, Mannie Fresh, Juvenile, Jeezy, Turk, and Wayne. Nothing else will ever be done by anybody else in this world like what we have done.
